Professional teeth cleanings are an important way to maintain whole body health and to keep your own teeth for your entire life. And it feels great to have clean teeth!
Most of our patients have their teeth cleaned by our gentle and skilled hygienists two to four times a year. Together we can prevent or slow the progress of periodontal (gum) disease and the loss of teeth.
Gum disease is the loss of bone from around the tooth. It begins as plaque (food and bacteria) collects around the tooth. If this plaque is not removed within 24 hours it begins to mineralize and it becomes very difficult to get off the teeth. This hard material is called calculus or tartar. Inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) begins and if not controlled will progress to periodontal disease. With gum disease the bone is slowly destroyed, the teeth become loose, and without intervention may be lost.
Your gum health, bone levels, pocket depth around the teeth, amount of saliva, and how well you brush and floss are all evaluated at your cleaning.
At the end of your teeth cleaning visit your hygienist will polish your teeth to remove stains so that your smile looks great and your teeth feel smooth and clean.
